9.27. (10/21) Delta Facies, upper/lower delta plains Flashcards
Crevasse Splay, Distributary mouth bars & channels/process jets
What is Crevasse Splay
describes a process of the river breaking through the levee in the upper delta (flood) plane and spreading sand onto it
*sheet of sand with erosive contact and regular flood sediment in stratigraphy
*looks like an alluvial fan
What are the distributary mouth bars and channels?
- found in the lower delta plane
- ## distribute water and sediment
What is a jet?
take sediment that has been delivered to them to make a series of bars that propagate forward
*with the water
What kind of bars are formed from narrow jets and that squirt sediment far?
What kind of bars are formed from wide jets and that don’t squirt sediment far?
What is the equation for the discharge of the river?
Qo= πr^2Uo
What is the equation for the discharge of the jet?
Qx= πR^2Ux
How do we find Rx?
xtanθ
Why won’t delta bars mix?
What is the equation for momentum?
mass times velocity
What is the equation for mass?
πr^2ρU^2
What is Gilbert?
What is the equation for Gilbert?
Ux is proportional to 1/x
What is friction-type?
What is the equation for friction-type?
Ux is proportional to 1/x^2
