9.2 Flashcards
What does a pressurized fluid in a enclosed system allow u to do?
Allows us to transmit force from one end of the system to the other
Static pressure?
A pressure created inside a closed system that is capable of transmitting a force, even though the fluid is stationary
Dynamic pressure?
The pressure of a moving fluid, which exerts a force and completes work
Hydraulics?
The study and use of pressure in liquids
Hydraulic system?
A fluid system that uses a pressurized liquid transmit force and complete work
What is the purpose of constructing a fluid system?
By Controlling pressure, we can make fluids go where we want do work for us
What do most hydraulic systems use to move the fluid ?
Pumps
Pump?
A device that moves fluids
Most common used pump?
Piston pump
Valve?
A device that controls or directs the flow of fluid through a system
When valves are used in particularly open positions, what does it help u to do?
Allows u to regulate the pressure
Check valve
A specialized type of valve that allows movement in only one direction
What are the different types of valves ?
Gate valve
Butterfly valve
Ball valve
What do simple machines do?
Change direction of force
Change the magnitude, or multiply, the force
(Mechanical advantage)
Hydraulic multiplication?
The process of using a hydraulic system to multiply the Input force to gain a mechanical advantage
Hydraulic lift?
A device that uses hydraulic multiplication
How do u achieve the force of hydraulic multiplication?
The surface area of the input pisten needs to b smaller than the output pisten
What is it about hydraulic systems that allows you to this multiplication of a force?
Notice the pressure is the same as the input side as it is at the output side
Liquids are incompressible, so the applied force is not lost or used up, it is transferred
Disadvantages to hydraulic systems allowing you to this multiplication of a force?
To gain mechanical advantages, u sacrifice distance
Problems with hydraulic systems?
Every twist and turn in the pipe increases th systems resistance to flow
Every spot one pipe connects to another pipe or to a fitting can leak
The size of the pump affects the pressure in the system
The liquids flow can be slowed down by any obstructions
What does the study of gases lead to?
Pneumatics
Pneumatics?
The study and use of pressure in gases
What are fluid systems that use gases called?
Pneumatics systems
Pneumatic systems?
A fluid system that uses a pressurized gas to transmit force and complete work
Can pneumatics systems be used to transmit an applied force and why?
No pneumatics can’t be used to transmit an applied force because any force you apply to the gas goes into compressing the gas and is not transmitting
Difference between pneumatic systems and hydraulic systems
Hydraulic
-liquids are incompressible, so very little force is lost
-can be used at very high pressure
Pneumatic
-gases are compressible, so gas can be pressurized in a tank, transported, them used somewhere else to do work
-operate at much lower pressures, so generally safer
