9 - Psychophysiological Measurements Flashcards
What are the three ways we can measure emotional responses in the lab?
Evaluative reports, overt actions, and physiological responses
Which neurotransmitter does the sympathetic nervous system use at the postganglionic synpapses?
Norepinephrine
Which neurotransmitter does the parasympathetic nervous system use at the postganglionic synapses?
Acetylcholine
Which system is faster, the sympathetic or the parasympathetic?
Parasympathetic nervous system is faster
What is the natural pacemaker of the heart?
SA node
What is the electrical gateway to the ventricals in the heart?
AV node
When does the SA node fire and which wave represents this in the ECG?
When the atria are full of blood, represented by the P wave
When does the AV node fire?
During the QRS complex
What is systole and when does it occur in the ECG?
Systole is ventricular contraction and it occurs immediately after the QRS complex, before the ventricular repolarization at the T wave
Which node does the parasympathetic nervous system control heart rate through?
SA node
Which node does the sympathetic nervous system control heart beat strength through?
VA node
What is blood pressure?
The force exerted by the blood against the vessel walls (mmHg)
What are baroreceptors?
Sensors in the heart that detect variations in blood pressure and signal to the brain the current state of cardiovascular arousal
What are the signals from aortic baroreceptors conveyed to the brain by?
Vagus nerve
What are the signals from carotid baroreceptors conveyed by?
Glossopharyngeal nerve
