What is a risk assessment?
A process that considers what might cause harm to people and steps that can be taken to reduce that risk. All employers are required by law to carry out risk assessments.
What is a hazard?
Anything that could cause someone harm.
What is a control measure?
Any action carried out in advance to protect against a possible danger.
Give some examples of safe working procedures.
Training, personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard signs, designated walk zones.
What is the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)?
A national watchdog for work-related health & safety. It produces guidance documents and investigates workplace accidents to help employers to meet H&S obligations.
What is the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA)?
The main piece of legislation for British health & safety law. Requires employers to assess risks and adopt appropriate safety measures.
What are the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations?
Legislation that requires employers to reduce their workers’ exposure to hazardous substances. They require the use of hazard symbols to identify hazardous substances.
What hazardous substances might the COSHH regulations protect from?
Varnishes, fumes from soldering/brazing, wood dust.
What are the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations?
Legislation requiring the use of proper PPE.
What is the Consumer Protection Act (CPA)?
Legislation that requires products to carry relevant health & safety information.
What is the British Standards Institute (BSI)?
A national body that works with industry and government to produce standards that ensure products are well-produced, safe and fit for purpose. Approved products are given the BSI Kitemark.
