9. Chapter 13- Skeletal Muscle Reflexes Flashcards

1
Q

What are 4 components of skeletal muscle reflexes?

What are the two types of reflexes?

A
  1. Sensory receptor
  2. Integrating centre
  3. Efferent neurons
  4. Effectors

Monosynaptic reflex- single synapse between afferent and efferent neurons
Polysynaptic reflex- 2 or more synapses (both in CNS)

Q

What are proprioreceptors?

What are it’s 3 parts?

A

Provide info to CNS on position of our limbs in space, movements, and effort exerted by skeletal muscles
1. Muscle spindle
2. Golgi tendon organ
3. Joint receptors- found in capsules and ligaments around joints

Q

What are muscle spindles?

A

Small stretch receptors scattered among and parallel to skeletal muscle fibres
Send info to CNS on muscle length and changes in it
Sensory neuron wrapped around intrafusal muscle fibres
Increase stretch=increase during AP rate

Q

What is the Golgi tendon organ?

A

Sensory neuron woven among collagen fibres inside a connective time capsule
Responds to muscle tension
High tension=collagen fibres stretched

Q

What controls movement around joint?

A

Stretch reflexes and reciprocal inhibition
Stimulus of sensory receptors can lead to contraction of one muscle and inhibition of the antagonistic muscle

Q

What are flexion reflexes?

A

Pull limbs away from painful stimuli, can occur in spinal cord
Flexion reflex in one limb causes extension in the opposite limb
Touch a stove

Pain activates nociceptor, sensory neuron enters spinal cord and diverges, shift in centre of gravity, withdrawal reflex, extensor reflex kicks in
