How common is it?
More common in low-income regions
Who does it affect?
IVDUs, alcoholics, people who haven’t been vaccinated, MSM
How does it present?
Acute is often asymptomatic
Pyrexia, N+V, anorexia, abdo pain, fatigue, myalgia
Dark urine, pale poo, itchy skin, jaundice
What risk factors are there?
IV drug use, excessive alcohol use, poor sanitation,
What complications are there?
Acute liver failure
What signs may the patient have on examination?
Signs of liver disease (spider naevi, caput medusae, palmar erythema, ascites)
What other conditions might present similarly?
Sepsis, systemic hypotension, congestive heart failure, malignancies
How would you investigate?
LFTs - raised ALT + bilirubin (+AP, GGT)
Serology
What treatments are there?
Further testing in 3 months for asymptomatic patients
Transplant
Symptom management
Alcohol cessation
What complications are there?
Acute liver failure, cirrhosis
