9/18 Foot & Ankle Competency Flashcards
Where would you find a dorsals pedis pulse?
top of the foot
Where you find a posterior tibial pulse?
medial side of foot inferior to medial malleolus (distal aspect of the tibia)
How do we do strength testing for the ankle?
Dorsiflexion against resistance
Plantarflexion against resistance
Toe walking
Heel walking
How do we perform neurologic testing on the foot?
sensation via the L4, L5, S1 dermatomes
Achilles tendon reflex (hit w/ hammer while foot hanging over bench, knee extended)
Monofilament test –> poking a point on its toe. (especially the first and fourth toe)
How do you perform the Anterior Drawer test? What are you testing?
stabilize inferior tib/fib
w/ other hand grab calcaneous and apply anterior traction
gapping + pain = positive test
Testing anterior talofibular ligament
How do you perform the Talar Tilt test? What are you testing?
stabilize inferior tib/fib
w/ other hand grab calcaneous
gently invert
gapping + pain = positive test
Testing calcaneofibular ligament
How do you perform the Eversion test? What are you testing?
stabilize inferior tib.fib
w/ other hand evert foot
gapping + pain = positive test
Testing deltoid ligament
How do you perform the Squeeze test? What are you testing?
squeeze tibia/fibula just proximal to the ankle w/ rapid release
pain = positive test
Testing for ankle sprain (syndesmosis injury)
How do you perform the Cross Leg test? What are you testing?
cross leg over opposite knee
crossed leg’s knee shouldn’t induce pain
pain = positive test
Testing for high ankle sprain
How do you perform the Thompson test? What are you testing?
squeeze gastrocnemius muscle w/ hands next to each other
absence of plantar flexion = positive test
Testing integrity of achilles tendon
How do you perform the Homan’s sign?
What are you testing?
knee extended, forcibly dorsiflex foot
pain = positive test
Testing for deep vein thrombosis
How do you perform the Moses sign? What are you testing?
pt. sitting, compress gastrocnemius muscle w/ both hands
pain = positive test
Testing for posterior tibial vein thrombosis (DVT)
What accounts for 80 - 85% of all ankle sprains?
Inversion Ankle Sprain (rolling foot outwards)
What ligament is involved in Inversion Ankle Sprains?
Anterior Talofibular ligament
What injury occurs in a High Ankle Sprain? What motion happens in a High Ankle Sprain
Eversion and dorsiflexion
Syndesmosis Injury
