8marks - reasons for voting Flashcards
one reason people vote is because people want to see the party they support elected
This is because they agree with the party’s policies and they want this party to be in charge of how the country is run - not the party they hate.
For example, someone who wants an Independent Scotland would vote for SNP
another reason people vote is because they want the results to be truthful
This is because they want the result to be a true reflection on how the country feels on political issues or which party should be in power.
For example, in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, voter turnout reached 63.5% which is the highest percentage ever reached.
another reason why people vote is because it is one of our key rights as a democracy
This is because many people believe it is a huge responsibility to vote, especially since people in many other countries don’t have this right or elections don’t give them a free choice.
For example, in Scotland, we have the ability to vote for a selection of parties whereas in North Korea, only one party is shown on the ballot paper therefore that party receives all votes.
One reason why people don’t vote is because they can’t be bothered going out to vote
This is because for some people voting is a hassle or they might find it difficult to get to a polling station.
For example, 36.5% of people didn’t vote in the 2021 Scottish Parliament Election.
Another reason why people don’t vote is because they don’t like any of the candidates standing for election.
This is because a voter might not want to vote for people they don’t think would do a good job.
For example, some people might not like the biggest party leaders such as Nicola Sturgeon or Douglas Ross.
Another reason why people don’t vote is because they aren’t interested in politics
This is because some people don’t care about who runs the country as they don’t see any party improving things for them.
For example, a lot of young people don’t vote because they don’t believe politicians listen to them.
