8F - The Periodic Table Flashcards
Atom
Smallest units of all matter. Cannot be broken down any further
Element
Made of only one type of atom
Dalton’s atomic theory
All matter is made up of atoms which are indestructible and cannot be created. In compounds, each atom of an element is always joined to a fixed number of atoms in another element. During chemical reactions, atoms rearrange to make new substances
Signs of chemical reactions
Change of colour, gas produced, solid formed from solution, energy change
Properties of most metals
High melting point, malleable, good conductors of heat and electricity, shiny, strong
Properties of non-metals
Poor conductors of heat and electricity, dull, low melting point, solids or gases, brittle
Catalyst
Substances that speed up chemical reactions without being used up themselves
Chemical properties
E.g flammability, pH, reaction with acid
Physical properties
E.g melting point, boiling point, density
Reactivity increases going…
Down a group in group 1 (alkali metals) and up in group 7 (halogens)
