8.9 Lewis Acids And Bases Flashcards
What is a lewis acid?
An electron pair acceptor, must have space in its outer shell to accept a pair of electrons.
What is a lewis base?
An electron pair donor must have a lone pair of electrons.
What happens during a Lewis acid base reaction?
A coordinate covalent bond is always formed when the base donates a pair fo electrons to the acid.
What are examples of a lewis acid base reactions?
Formation of a copper ion by a translation metal ion, the transition metal ion is the lewis acid and the ligand is the lewis base.
Why is the formation of a complex ion only an acid base reaction according to the lewis theory?
Not according to the bronzed lowry theory since there is no transfer of a proton.
What are other examples of a lewis acid and base?
A nucleophile is a lewis base and an electrophile is a lewis acid.
