How is the palmar interossei muscle tested?
The examiner places a sheet of paper between adjacent fingers, and the person must keep the fingers together to prevent the paper from being pulled away.
What is the common flexor sheath, and where is it located?
The common flexor sheath, or ulnar bursa, contains the tendons of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) and is located deep to the flexor retinaculum
What is the purpose of the fibrous digital sheaths in the hand?
The fibrous digital sheaths are ligamentous tunnels that prevent bowstringing of the tendons and allow them to slide freely over each other.
What is a tendinous chiasm?
It is the crossing of the FDS and FDP tendons near the base of the proximal phalanx, where the FDS tendon splits to allow the FDP tendon to pass through.
What is the significance of the vincula in the long flexor tendons?
Vincula are synovial folds that supply blood to the tendons from the periosteum of the phalanges.
Why is the hand supplied with highly branched and anastomosing arteries?
Because the hand needs oxygenated blood in various positions and conditions, often while grasping or applying pressure.
