Where does the deep palmar arch lie in the hand?
It lies at the level of the bases of the metacarpal bones, 1.5–2 cm proximal to the superficial palmar arch.
What are the lumbricals, and why are they named so?
The lumbricals are four slender muscles named for their worm-like shape (Latin: lumbricus, earthworm).
What movements do the lumbricals perform?
The lumbricals flex the fingers at the metacarpophalangeal joints and extend the interphalangeal joints.
How can the lumbrical muscles be tested?
To test the lumbricals, the patient flexes the metacarpophalangeal joints while keeping the interphalangeal joints extended, and resistance is applied to the proximal phalanx.
Where are the dorsal and palmar interossei muscles located?
The dorsal interossei are located between the metacarpals, while the palmar interossei lie on the palmar surfaces of the metacarpals.
How many dorsal and palmar interossei are there?
There are four dorsal interossei and three palmar interossei.
