Environmental diseases
-not caused by pathogens
-not infectious or contagious
-caused by the environment or lifestyle of the organism
diet
The food an individual eats
Nutrition
the nutrients that is obtained from the diet
malnutrtion
-occurs due to unbalanced diets
-could be due to over or under nutrition
scurvy
-caused by the lack of vitamin c
-symptoms include bleeding gums, teeth falling out and sore joints
Rickets
-Lack of vitamin d
-symptoms include soft bones that bend under the mass of the body
-can worsen if there is an insufficient amount of calcium and phosphate in the diet.
kwashiokor
-Caused by lack of protein
-Causes brain and muscle developments to be slowed
-symptoms include pot belly, weak stomach muscles, lack of energy and hair loss
-60% fatality rate
obesity
-overweight is a term used when more fat is stored in the body than considered healthy
-BMI calculations indicate if someone is healthy or not.
-mass(kg)/high (m^2)
High blood pressure
-caused by too much salt consumption
-high levels of salt can lead to kidney damage and high blood pressure
-can cause a heart attack (part of the heart is oxygen deprived and dies) and stroke(blood pressure is blocked to part of the brain and it dies.
Insulin
-Insulin is a hormone that triggers cells to take up glucos, without insulin glucose is built up in the blood and the cells are starved of energy
type 2 diebetes
- caused by insensitivity to insulin
- often caused by exess consumptions of sugary foods causing the body to be resistant or insensitive to insulin
-can be managed through a diet or exercise
Type 1 diabetes
- caused by the immune system attacking b cells of the pancreas which prevents insulin production
-can be managed through insulin injections and blood tests - often caused by genetics
