8.1 immune system Flashcards
1
Q
First line of defence
A
Designed to prevent entry of the pathogen into the body. Skin, Tears, Saliva, stomach acid, mucus
2
Q
Second line of defence
A
-Uses nonspecific responses
fever: heats the body to weaken or kill the pathogen
inflammation: Blood stream directs more white blood cells to the effected area to kill the pathogen
phagocytosis: sends phagocytes to engult and kill the pathogens.
3
Q
The third line of defense
A
- Takes a few days to react
- Sends B cells to identify and mark the pathogen
- B cells create antibodies with a matching marker
- Once the antibody binds with the pathogens, B cells release millions of antibodies to help fight off the pathogens
-After the pathogen is defeated the B cells remain in the blood which creates memory cells
-Immune to future attacks of the same pathogen
4
Q
Vaccination
A
-Vaccines are made of dead/inactive pathogens.
-The pathogens trigger the 3rd line of defense and build memory without making us dangerously sick.
