Q

how is pH calculated

A

pH = -log [H+]
[H+] = 10^ -pH

  • same with pOH only instead oh [H+] we have [OH-]

Q

what kind of relationship do we have between pH and [H+]

A

Inversely proportional
increasing pH by 1 uit = decreasig [H+] 10 times and vice versa

Q

how can pH be measured?

A
  • using an universal indicator paper/solution
  • pH meter or probe that directly read the [H+]

pH meters can record an accuracy of several decimal points.
pH meters must be calibrated with a buffer solution and standardized for the temperature.

Q

what is Kw

A

Kw = [H+] [OH-] = 1.00 * 10^ -14
it is a constant
can be used to find concentrations
