8.2 Sensory Flashcards
4 aspects of something that can be perceived
- modality
- intensity
- duration
- location
What is modality?
=quality
Type of R
Define what is threshold
The point when the stimulus intensity is such that in 50% of cases we can detect a stimulus and 50% we can’t
Structure of the sensory neurons
Typically pseudo-unipolar
But can also be Bi-polar (olfactory, retina, auditory, vestibular)
What does somatosensory R includes?
Mechano
Thermo
Nociceptors
What does rapidly adapting means?
Can only detect a signal if it is quickly on and off.
Surrounded by a capsule
Describe slowly adapting R
Don’t have a capsule
Stimulus willlast longer
Describe Pacinian R
Deep (subcutaneous)
Rapidly adapting
Detects vibration
What are the two somatosensory pathways?
Dorsal column- medial leminiscus
anterolateral (spinothalamic tract)
What R does the DC-ML uses?
- Mechano (Pacinian, Ruffini, Meissner, Merkel)
- Proprioceptors
What does the DC-ML responsible for?
Detection of fine touch, vibration, proprioception, 2 point discrimination
What R does the AnteroLateral pathway uses?
Thermo
Nocioceptors
What info does the Ant spinothalamic tract carries?
Crude touch
What info does the Lateral spinothalamic tract carries?
Pain and temperature
What tract in the head is the analog to spinothalamic tract?
Trigemino-thalamic
