8 the brain Flashcards
define the brain.
highly organised mass of interneurones connected with the rest of the nervous system by motor and sensory neurones
what is grey matter?
‘outside’ nerve cell bodies, synapses
what is white matter?
axons which connect parts of the brain
what connects the cerebral hemispheres?
corpus callosum
what area is the frontal lobe found?
front
what area is the parietal lobe found?
middle top
what area is the occipital lobe found?
back
what area is the temporal lobe found?
below
where is the hypothalamus found?
just below the middle part/ thalamus
role of hypothalamus:
thermoregulation, maintains body temp, endocrine gland, sleep, thirst hunger regulation
role of cerebellum:
coordinating movement and balance
role of cerebrum:
Thoughts
Emotion
Seeing
Hearing
role of hippocampus:
long-term memory + learning
role of medulla oblongata:
heart rate , breathing rate and CO2 levels
what does MRI?
magnetic resonance imaging
what do MRIs detect?how?
- detect soft tissue
- radio waves turned on and off →atoms are release energy to create images, thin slices= 3D image
why are MRIs useful?
produces images with high resolution, the brain tumour = lighter area
what does fMRI stand for?
functional magnetic resonance imaging
how do fMRIs work?
-oxyhaemoglobin does not absorb the radio waves, deoxyhaemoglobin does
what does less absorption mean from an fMRI?
less absorbed= more haemoglobin= more uptake
