Ovariohysterectomy and its affects
Removal of the ovaries & uterus
Elimination of oestrus
Prevent pregnancy
Protection against mammary, ovarian & uterine disease
Define Ovariectomy
Removal of the ovaries
What is a hysterectomy & why would we use it?
Removal of the uterus
Prevents pregnancy
No increased risk of other diseases
Oestrus behaviour continues
Give 2 advantages of neutering the bitch pre-puberty?
No possibility of mating
No possibility of pseudopregnancy
Surgical procedure easier
Reduced anaesthetic time
Give 2 disadvantages of neutering the bitch pre-puberty?
Delayed closure of growth plates (risk of fractures)
Underdevelopment of sexual organs
> > > Obesity?, post spay incontinence, persistent puppy coat, underdeveloped behavioural characteristics
Early age neuter increases of some neoplasia & joint disease
How long after oestrus should you wait before spaying in the bitch ?
3 months
How can spaying cause a persistent pseudopregnancy?
If you spay a dog in the luteal phase and not in an oestrus they will have high levels of progesterone currently being produced
Spaying causes a dramatic rapid fall in p4 causing the pituitary to respond and produce more prolactin
Causes iatrogenic pseudopregnancy
If you don’t want to wait 3 months to spay a dog after oestrus when else could you do it?
In the small gap between oestrus & prolactin being produced
3 week period
removal before prolactin is turned on - no rise
List 2 advantages of ovariectomy
- Reduced incidence of mammary neoplasia
- Prevention of uterine disease - pyo/neoplasia
- Prevention of ovarian disease
- Prevention of pseudopregnancy
List 2 disadvantages of ovariectomy
- Increased incidences of some neoplasia (osteosarcoma)
- Weight gain, changes in behaviour, coat texture
- Increased urinary incontinence?
