heterographs
words that are spelled differently, mean different things but sound the same
homographs/homophones
words spelled in the same way but have two meanings and sometimes two different pronunciations
lexical decision task
ppts task consists of deciding whether a string of letter is a word or not
naming task
ppts task consists of saying printed words out loud as quickly as possible
how are two words phonological neighbours
if they differ in only one phoneme
word superiority effect
a string of letters presented
need to decide which letter was in particular position
if string of letters given correspond to a word, they are much better at the task than if the string of letter corresponded to a non-word
what is eye tracking used for
to monitor and analyse eye movements during tasks like reading or viewing images
in reading, can examine attention allocation across words, sentences and paras
word predictability
words that are predicted in a sentence are more likely to have shorter fixation and sometimes even skipped by readers
integrative processing
readers will integrate info faster only once they have accessed the word’s meaning
anticipatory processing
sentence context allows us to predict what it might come next
frequency effect
we are faster at processing high-frequent words than low frequency words
dual-route cascaded model
the cognitive processes involved in reading words and nonwords differ from each other
distributed connectionist approach
same processes are used for words and nonwords
orthography
spelling/perception of the words
phonology
sounds of the words
