8: Printmaking Flashcards
printing in three dimensions from a design created using modeling software
3-D printing
intaglio process in which value areas rather than lines are etched onto plate used powdered resin that bites into surface when placed in acid
aquatint
a trial print, usually made as an artist works on a plate or block, to check the progress of the work
artist’s proof
a sharp cutting tool used in engraving
burin
the ridge left by scratching a drypoint line in a copper plate - holds ink for printing
burr
intaglio printmaking process in which lines are scratched directly into a metal plate with a steel needle, raising a burr that receives the ink
drypoint
total number of prints made and approved by the artist, usually numbered consecutively
edition
any work produced in an edition, such as a print - not unique like a painting
editioned work
intaglio printmaking process in which grooves are cut into a metal or wood surface with a sharp cutting tool (burin)
engraving
intaglio printmaking process in which a metal plate is first coated with wax/varnish, then scratched to expose metal beneath
etching
any printmaking technique in which lines and areas to be inked are recessed below the surface of the printing plate
intaglio
relief printmaking process in which an artist cuts away negative spaces from a block of linoleum, leaving raised areas to take ink for printing
linoleum cut (linocut)
printing process where artist draws directly onto the surface of stone or plate - requires no cutting of matrix
lithography
block of metal, wood, stone, or other material that an artist works to create a print
matrix
lithographic printing by indirect image transfer from photomechanical plates - plate transfers ink to a rubber-covered cylinder which transfers it to paper
offset lithography
