12: Sculpture Flashcards
sculptural form produced by adding, combining, or building up material from a core or armature
additive sculpture
a rigid framework serving as a supporting inner core for clay or other soft sculpting material
armature
sculpture made by assembling found or cast-off objects
assemblage
sculpture in relief in which the subjects emerge only slightly from the surface - no undercutting present
low (bas) relief
curving, often dome-shaped decoration that protrudes from a flat surface (like a round bump)
boss
a subtractive process in which a sculpture is formed by removing material from a block or mass of wood, stone etc. with the use of sharpened tools
carving
process that involves pouring liquid material such as molten metal, clay, wax, or plaster into a mold - when liquid hardens, mold is removed, and a form in the shape of the mold is left
casting
creating a work of sculpture by putting together pieces that are already formed by the artist
construction
any piece or type of sculpture that is meant to be seen from all sides
freestanding
sculpture in relief in which a significant portion of the subject emerges from the background - requires undercutting
high relief
art medium in which the artist arranges objects or artworks in a specific room, thinking of the entire space as the medium to be manipulated
installation
sculpture that incorporates actual movement as part of the design
kinetic sculpture
model is made from wax and encased in clay - when clay is fired to make a mold, wax melts away, leaving a void that can be filled with molten metal to produce a cast
lost wax
works of art made with more than one medium
mixed media
type of sculpture in which parts move, usually suspended parts activated by air currents
