8 PRINCIPLE PATTERN DIAGNOSIS Flashcards
The 8 principles are…
1) exterior / interior
2) cold / heat
3) vacuity / repletion
4) yin / yang
when there is vacuity you want to
restore the right
when there is repletion you want to
dispell the evil
What is a combination?
signs of 2 or more of the UN-PAIRED -OR- signs of both INTERIOR & EXTERIOR
What is a conversion?
the change of on principle by symptoms of the opposing principle of the pair (ie.exterior to interior)
What is a complex
When you have bothe cold/heat and vacuity/repletion signs
Exterior Patterns effect the _________ and indicate
Exterior Patterns ONLY THE EXTERIOR (skin, body hair, skin flesh and superficial channels); They indicate that DISEASE IS IN INITIAL STAGES AND RELITIVELY MILD
Exterior Pattern signs:
1) Aversion to COLD & to WIND
2) FEVER
3) HEADACHE
4) PAIN IN LIMB JOINTS
5 FLOATING PULSE
Exterior Pattern signs are in Western Terms
- Upper Respitory tract infections
- acute infectious disease like common cold & influenza in their initial stages are exterior
The wei qi obstucted by & fighting an external evils gives rise to
can give rise to fire.
Evil QI IN THE CHANNELS impairing the SMOOTH FLOW OF BLOOD & QI can cause
HEADACHE & PAIN IN THE LIMB JOINTS.
EXTERIOR COLD PATTERN signs (1-6)
1) alot of Aversion to cold
2) headache
3) body (generalized) pain
4) moist white thin tongue coat
5) tight floating pulse
6) runny nose w clear nasal mucus, & clear thin phlegm
EXTERIOR COLD patterns are caused by
WIND-COLD EVIL
EXTERIOR HEAT patterns signs (1-6)
1) red sore throat
2) red tongue with dry coating
3) in addition to exterior s/sx: FLOATING & RAPID pulse
4) cough
5) thick white/yellow phlegm
6) a little aversion to cold
Treatment for Exterior Cold
Warm the exterior
Treatment for Exterior Heat
Cool the exterior
EXTERIOR HEAT patterns are caused by
Wind-heat evil
EXTERIOR REPLETION pattern s/sx (1-3)
1) NO SWEATING
2) TIGHT & FLOATING PULSE
3) Exterior S/Sx
EXTERIOR REPLETION caused by
An EXUBERANT COLD EVIL that obstructs the wei Qi and blocks the interstices which leads to no sweating and tight floating pulse
Treatment for Exterior Repletion
Warm the exterior
EXTERIOR VACUITY pattern s/sx (1-4)
1) a LOT OF SWEATING
2) FEVER
3) Constuction & wei Qi disharmony (thus body’s resistance to external evils is lowered and the sweating fails to expel the evil)
4) MODERATE FLOATING PULSE
Treatment for EXTERIOR VACUITY
Harmonize Constuction & Wei Qi

INTERIOR PATTERNS may occur when
1) one or more of the 6 evils (excesses) passes from exterior to the interior
OR
2) caused by affect (emotional?) damage, taxation fatigue, or dietary irregularities THAT DIRECTLY affect the BOWELS & VISCERA, BLOOD, QI & FLUIDS
INTERIOR PATTERNS that occur in externally contracted febrile diseases distinction must be made
BTWN heat, repletion, cold & vacuity
INTERIOR HEAT & REPLETION: S/SX
when exterior evil interiorizes and TRANSFORMS TO HEAT (1-4)
1) Fever WITHOUT aversion to cold
2) Red tongue w/ yellow coat
3) Rapid pulse
4) Short Voidings of reddish urine
(all of these indicate pronounced interior heat)
INTERIOR REPLETION S/SX (1 - 4)
Interior Repletion, is exterior evil penetrating the interior can cause:
1) pain, distension & fullness in chest and abdomen
2) hard stool (constipation)
3) sunken replete pulse
4) thick, slimy yellow tongue coat
NOTE: these signs are indicative of gastro-intestinal heat-bind (ie. interior repletion)
INTERIOR COLD & VACUITY S/SX
iNTERIORIZATION of evils can produce cold or vacuity:
1) no fever
2) aversion to cold
3) vomiting,
4) chest pain,
5) diarrhea
6) no thirst
7) moist white tongue coat
8) moderate soggy pulse
