8. Plant signalling Flashcards
How long ago did plants move to dry land|?
Over 450 million years ago.
What is Thigmonasty?
A plants response to touch.
What is a plasmodesmata?
a channel which enables transport and communication between plant cells.
Name 2 components of the plants anatomy which help aid the vascular system
Xylem - water moves from soil to atmosphere via xylem dead cells
Phloem - sugars produced by photosynthesis are transported via the phloem
Describe how Thigmonasty occurs
- Ions flow into outer cells in Pulvini
- Uptake of Aquaporins and H+ ATPase pumps
- Turgor increase/decrease due to osmosis
How does the xylem respond to drought?
- Drought-stressed roots release signals
- signals cause guard cells to close
- reduced respiration
- water is preserved
What feature of the plant controls cell size
Vacuole during osmosis
What molecule provides signals for the uptake of phosphate and how does this occur?
microRNA (miR399) by moving through the phloem
