Used to contrast 2 same items with difference.
Symbolism
Use of symbols to symbolize ideas + qualities different from their literal sense.
Metaphor
Comparing 2 unlike, but somehow related things to provide a clearer description without like or as.
Simile
Comparing 2 unlike, but somehow related things to provide a clearer description, with like or as.
Imagery
The use of vivid + descriptive language to create mental images.
Personification
Giving nonhuman things human traits.
Flashback
Takes the narrative back in time.
Diction
Specific word choice to create tone.
Dialect
Specific language for culture/ area. Reminds the reader of the author’s culture + background.
Foreshadowing
Writer hints to what will come later in the book. Used for suspense, contributes to a gloomy situation and mood.
Author’s Purpose
Why does he use this device? To help Show the reader, Help reader understand, Wants reader to know, to Foreshadow, etc.
SHWF
Put yourself in his shoes: I wanted to use this device to help the reader do something (fairly simple).
Analyze the quote
Significance of the quote/ device? Helps the reader understand something deeper, and more emotional.
