Alliteration
Repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of the words that are close together.
Ex: run, round
Assonance
When 2+ words close to one another repeat the same vowel sound but start with different consonant sounds.
Ex: Men sell the wedding bells.
Consonance
Repetitive sounds produced by consonants. This repetition often takes place in quick succession such as in pitter, patter.
Ex: Shelley sells shells by the seashore
End Rhyme
When the last syllables or words in two or more lines rhyme with each other.
Ex: Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night
Internal Rhyme
A rhyme that occurs within a single line or a verse.
Ex: Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.
Repitition
Use of a word, clause, phrase, etc. multiple times
Rhyme Scheme
The pattern of end rhymes in a poem.
Slant Rhyme
Slant Rhymes have a repetition in the final consonant
Ex: Afternoon, and Queen.
Rhyme
Full rhymes have a repetition in both the final consonant and the preceding vowel or consonant
Ex. chic, fleek
Allusion
Reference to anything famous
Hyperbole
Uses exaggeration to express strong emotion or to create a comic effect.
Ex: My backpack weighed a ton
Imagery
Language that appeals to the senses
Symbolism
Person, place, or thing that stands for something beyond itself
Stanza
Paragraph of a poem
Couplet
2 consecutive lines of poetry that usually rhyme
Tercet
A stanza consisting of 3 lines
Quatrain
A stanza consisting of 4 lines
Sestet
A stanza consisting of 6 lines
Octave
A stanza consisting of 8 lines
Rhythm
The pattern of stresses and pauses in a poem
Foot
The basic unit of measurement in metrical poetry
Iamb
A metrical foot of verse in which an unaccented syllable is followed by an accented one.
Ex: “a-rouse” and “a cat”
Meter
Generally regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry
Iambic Pentameter
A meter consisting of 5 iambs
Blank Verse
Poetry written in unrhymed IAMBIC PENTAMETER (5 iambs)
Free verse
Poetry that doesn’t have a regular meter or rhyme scheme
Narrative
Poetry that tells a story
Ballad
- Plot-focused narrative verse
- Meant to be sung
- Usually composed of 14-foot quatrains (4-3-4-3)
- ABCB or ABAB rhyme
- Has repetition
Ex: Eclipse of the ♡
Epic
Long story told in elevated language/poetry, about the deeds of a hero that represents a society
Lyric
Poetry that doesn’t tell a story but is aimed only at expressing a speaker’s emotions or thoughts
Elegy
A lament/ meditative poem, often written on the occasion of a death
Haiku
- 3 unrhymed lines
- 5-7-5 syllables
- Japanese poem that focuses on nature
Limerick
A short, usually funny verse form of 5 lines w/ abba rhyme scheme.
Ode
- A lyric poem that addresses a particular subject.
- Often written in elevated style with varied meter
- Meant to be sung
Sonnet
14-line lyric poem that’s usually written in iambic pentameter and has 1 of several rhyme schemes
Shakespearean Sonnet
- Composed of 3 quatrains + 1 rhyming couplet.

Petrarchan Sonnet
Composed of 1 octave + 1 seset w/ a set rhyme scheme.
