8 - Flaviviruses and filoviruses Flashcards
What Baltimore class are flaviviruses?
Class IV
What Baltimore class are filoviruses?
Class V
What is the pathogenesis of HCV?
HCV proteins interfere with IFN pathways - prevents clearance of infected cells
HCV utilises host-derived lipids - dysregulation of lipid metabolism + fatty liver disease
Production of ROS - activation of hepatic stellate cells -> collagen secretion -> fibrosis -> DNA damage –> HCC
What happens during the early stages of Ebola virus infection?
- Antigen presentation blocked in dendritic cells
- Macrophage infection -> release of NO and inflammatory cytokines -> damage to endothelial cells -> leakage of blood cells vessels -> haemorrhaging
What happens during the late stages of Ebola virus infection?
Hepatocyte necrosis -> decreased production of coagulation factors
Adrenal cortical cells -> reduced production of steroid hormones that control BP
Endothelial cells -> disrupted cell adhesion + cell lysis
Sustained damage to blood vessels -> shock and multi-organ failure -> death
