6 - Rotavirus and Enteroviruses Flashcards
1
Q
Where do rotaviruses fit on the Baltimore classification scheme?
A
Class III
2
Q
Where do enteroviruses fit on the Baltimore classification scheme?
A
Class IV
3
Q
What is the viral enterotoxin in rotavirus called and what does it do?
A
NSP4 - causes Cl ion release
4
Q
How does rotavirus replication occur?
A
- dsRNA synthesised by RdRp
- mRNAs are capped and exported to the cytoplasm
- mRNAs translated by host ribosomes.
5
Q
How does rotavirus assembly occur?
A
- Vira proteins aggregate in the cytoplasm driving formation of RdRp containing nucleocapsids.
- (+)ssRNA strands taken up by nucleocapsid cores
- Complementary (-)ssRNA synthesised by RdRp in nucleocapsid cores
- Viral capsid proteins added by ER
- Mature virions released
6
Q
How does poliovirus production of viral proteins occur?
A
- VPg is cleaved enabling direct translation of viral RNA by host ribosomes.
- Translated as single polyprotein which is cleaved into smaller proteins with different functions
- Production of RdRp
7
Q
How does poliovirus genome synthesis / replication occur?
A
- Viral RdRp uridylates VPg
- uridylated VPg recognises poly A tail of viral genome acting as a primer for replication.
- (-)ssRNA strand is produced.
