Q

Flat Files (Spreadsheets)

A

Simple format for data sets designed for smaller/simple data sets; numerical data (can accommodate text)

  • Good for mathematical fxns involving data
    • Advantages = Simple to create the data set, Able to view all data at once
  • Not efficient for manipulating text-based data
    • Disadvantage = Large data sets can become difficult to manage

Relational Database

A

Multidimensional organizational tools/software that can accommodate numerical and text data(complex collection of data); Multiple spreadsheets linked by common identifiers designed for larger/complicated data sets

Q

Coding Handbook

A

Recording of steps taken prior to data collection to strengthen the methods of any outcome study; Roadmap for the study bc it contains terms, operational definitions, assigned numerical codes, and other procedures that occur during data harvesting

  • Should include:
  1. Find desired variables
  2. Determine the format for recording each variable → Bc things can be written out in multiple ways
  3. Convert text data into numerical codes (1=Female, 2=Male)
  4. Create procedures for storing data → Physical location of data, Security, etc
  5. Create accounting procedures → Need to know who does/did what Exception log → History of decisions; For recording decisions that are made when data does not conform to the rules; Helpful when it comes time to interpret the data

A

Has a set order which implies some sort of rank

  • “0” means true absence
  • SES
