Body Paragraph
groups of sentences that provide more info about the main idea
Comma
a punctuation mark that’s used to indicate a pause in a sentence; a comma is also used to separate coordinate adjectives
Complex Sentence
a group of words that includes a main clause and one or more independent clauses
Conclusion
the end of a piece of writing that sums up the text’s main points and sometimes leaves the reader with something to think about
Context Clue
a word or phrase near an unknown word that helps the reader determinethe unknown word’s meaning
Coordinate Adjectives
two or more adjectives that are equal in importance; a comma is used to separate them
Dependent Clause
a group of words that can’t stand alone as a sentence, even if it has a subject and a verb
Descriptive Details
a piece of info that helps the reader to visualize aspects of a work
Details
facts, statistics, explanations, data, and other evidence that help to convey the main idea of a text
Dialogue
the word that characters speak in a text; conversation between characters
Independent Clause
a group of words that includes a subject and a predicate and can stand alone as a sentence; also called a main clause
Introduction
the beginning of a piece of writing that captures the reader’s attention and presents the text’s thesis statement or main idea
Personal Narrative
a type of writing in which the author describes a personal experience
Point of View
the perspective in which a story a told
Subordinating Conjunction
a word that joins a dependent clause and an independent clause
Topic
what a piece of writing is mostly about
Transition
a word or phrase that indicates the sequence of events or the connections between ideas
Cause
something that brings about an effect, result, etc. such as an event or action
Cause and Effect Structure
a text organization common in technical texts that shows the relationships between actions, or ideas
Chronological Structure
a text structure/organization of events in the order in which they happened
Cite Details
to point to examples in a text that support the central idea
Compare
to look for similarities between ideas, people, places, events, or passages
Context Clue

a genre of writing that uses factual info to inform about events or people from history

to consider how a graphic feature helps the reader to better understand
Main Idea

Opinion
a view that someone takes on a certain issue based on a personal judgement; a belief that can’t be proven true
Primary Source
a document, speech, image, or other piece of evidence created by someone who is/was present when an event happened
Reasoned Judgement
a personal view that’s based on facts, logic, and reason
Secondary Source
something created or written about an event by a person who’s not present when the event happened

an organizational pattern in which information is presented in a sequence
Summarize
to briefly restate the most important ideas of a passage in your own words
Text Structure
the way an author organizes and presents information and ideas in a text
Aside
a stage direction in a play that tells the actor to speak his/her lines to the audience and not to the other actors on stage

the way an author/writer reveals a character’s personality
Connotation
the feeling/idea that a word expresses
Denotation
the dictionary definition of a word
Dialogue

a type of figurative language that attributes human qualities and characteristics to nonliving things
Plot
the sequence of events in a story that includes the character’s actions, a conflict, and resolution
Point of View
the perspective in which a story is told
Setting
the time, place and circumstances in which a story occurs
Soliloquy
a speech given by a lone actor that’s directed to the audience and usually reveals the character’s innermost feelings
Story Elements
the pieces that make up a story, including a plot, characters, and setting
Tone
the feeling a writer evokes with the specific use of language
