7.6 C molecules Flashcards
The simplest unit of a chemical compound that can exist, formed when two or more atoms join together chemically.
Molecule
Made up of smaller organic molecules that are often strung together to form long molecular chains, such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
Large Molecule
One of the nutrient-providing components of food; found in meat, milk, eggs, poultry, fish, and certain plants, including legumes and nuts.
Proteins
The building blocks of the proteins in our bodies and in the food we eat.
Amino Acids
One of the nutrient-providing components of food; used as an energy source in the body, and found in butter, oils, nuts, meat, fish, and some dairy products.
Lipids (fat)
The building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the food we eat.
Fatty Acid
One of the nutrient-providing components of food, with its most simple form being sugar, and the more complex forms starches ( grains, beans, potatoes, corn) and fiber.
Carbohydrates
A simple molecules with stored chemical energy; the product of photosynthesis and the building blocks of the carbohydrates in our bodies and in the food we eat.
Sugar (glucose)
Tough, stringy structures in plants that the human body cannot digest or break down, making them pass unchanged through the digestive system.
Fiber
Biological chemicals that help speed up complex chemical reactions in your body, completing very specific jobs and doing nothing else.
