7.6 A Organic Compounds Flashcards
The smallest particle of an element maintaining the chemical identity of that element.
Atom
A pure substance composed of the same type of atom throughout.
Element
Pure substance made of two or more kinds of atoms bound together
Compound
A naturally occurring element of Earth, and essential building block of organic compounds.
Carbon
A compound that contains organic carbon and other atoms, usually oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and/or sulfur.
Organic Compound
Does not contain the carbon-hydrogen atom combination that characterizes organic molecules; not of biological compounds.
Inorganic Compound
Molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen that break down into simple sugars.
Carbohydrates
Large complex molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sometimes sulfur that break down to amino acids.
Proteins
An organic compound, one of twenty building blocks of protein.
Amino Acids
Organic carbon-based substances, such as fat, oil, or wax, that dissolve in alcohol, but not in water; an important part of living cells.
