The stomach Flashcards
Which are the different parts of the stomach?
- Cardia
- Fundus
- Body
- Pyloric antrum
- Pyloric sphincter
Properties of the stomach
-Most stretchable and distensable part of the stomach
Greater curvature of the stomach
- Long, convex, lateral border
- Begins are the cardiac notch and swings round to the pyloric antrum
- Supplied by the short gastric arteries and the right and left gastro-omental arteries
Lesser curvature of the stomach
Short,Concave, medial border
- The most inferior section of it known as the angular notch divides the body from the antrum
- Supplied by the left and right gastric artery
What are the greater and lesser omenta
Double folds of the peritoneum which divide the abdominal peritoneum into the greater and lesser sac
Which are the sphincters of the stomach
- Inferior oesophageal sphincter
- Pyloric sphincter
What is the function of the sphincters?
- Inferior oesophageal sphincter controls the movement of food into the cardia
- Pyloric sphincter: controls the movement of chyme into the duodenum
What is the pyloric sphincter made from
thickening of the circular layer of the muscular externa
What is a pathology of the pyloric sphincter?
Congenital pyloric stenosis
What are the folds on the interior surface of the stomach known as?
The rugae
What are the rugae made up of?
Folds of mucosa and submucosa
Where are the rugae most common
- Body of greater curvature
- Antrum
What structures does the stomach lie on?
- Diaphragm - left lobe
- Left kidney
- Spleen
- Adrenal gland
- Pancreas
- Splenic artery
- Transverse colon
Blood supply to the stomach
- Right gastric : from Common hepatic
- Left gastric : from the coeliac trunk
- Right gastro-omental : from common hepatic
- Left gastro-omental: from splenic
Blood drainage of the stomach
- Veins run parallel to arteries
- Right and left gastric veins drain into the hepatic portal vein
- Right and left gastro-omental veins drain into the Superior mesenteric vein
