7.3.1/jayden Flashcards
What is Atmosphere
An atmosphere is the layers of gases surrounding a planet or other celestial body. Earth’s atmosphere is composed of about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and one percent other gases.
Altitude
the vertical elevation of an object above a surface (such as sea level or land) of a planet or natural satellite
Density
Density is the number of thingswhich could be people, animals, plants, or objects in a certain area
Troposphere
The troposphere is the first and lowest layer of the atmosphere of the Earth, and contains 75% of the total mass of the planetary atmosphere, 99% of the total mass of water vapor and aerosols, and is where most weather phenomena occur.
Stratosphere
The stratosphere is a layer of Earth’s atmosphere. It is the second layer of the atmosphere as you go upward. The troposphere, the lowest layer, is right below the stratosphere. The next higher layer above the stratosphere is the mesosphere.
Mesosphere
The mesosphere is the third layer of the atmosphere, directly above the stratosphere and directly below the thermosphere. In the mesosphere, temperature decreases as altitude increases.
Thermosphere
The thermosphere is a layer of Earth’s atmosphere that is directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere. It extends from about 90 km (56 miles) to between 500 and 1,000 km (311 to 621 miles) above our planet.
Exosphere
The exosphere is a thin, atmosphere-like volume surrounding a planet or natural satellite where molecules are gravitationally bound to that body, but where the density is so low that the molecules are essentially collisionless.
Temperature
Degree of hotness or coldness measured on a definite scale.
Nitrogen
A colorless odorless gaseous chemical element that makes up 78 percent of the atmosphere and forms a part of all living tissues.
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an important heat-trapping gas, or greenhouse gas, that comes from the extraction and burning of fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, and natural gas), from wildfires, and from natural processes like volcanic eruptions.
Oxygen
a chemical element found in the air as a colorless odorless tasteless gas that is necessary for life.
air pressure
That pressure is called atmospheric pressure, or air pressure. It is the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth. Atmospheric pressure is commonly measured with a barometer
concentration
The definition of concentration means the amount of ingredients or parts in relation to the other ingredients or parts. An example of concentration is the amount of salt to water in a saltwater solution.
condition
If someone has a particular condition, they have an illness or other medical problem. Doctors suspect he may have a heart condition.
