7.3.1/Jade Flashcards
Atmosphere
the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Altitude
the height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
Density
the degree of compactness of a substance.
Troposphere
The troposphere is the first and lowest layer of the atmosphere of the Earth
Stratosphere
The stratosphere is the second layer of the atmosphere of the Earth, located above the troposphere and below the mesosphere.
Mesosphere
The mesosphere is the third layer of the atmosphere, directly above the stratosphere and directly below the thermosphere. In the mesosphere, temperature decreases as altitude increases.
Thermosphere
a layer of Earth’s atmosphere that is directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere.
Exosphere
the outermost region of a planet’s atmosphere.
Temperature
degree of hotness or coldness measured on a definite scale.
Nitrogen
the chemical element of atomic number 7, a colorless, odorless unreactive gas that forms about 78 percent of the earth’s atmosphere.
Carbon Dioxide
a colourless gas formed during the combustion of any material containing carbon and an important green house gas.
Oxygen
a colorless, odorless reactive gas, the chemical element of atomic number 8 and the life-supporting component of the air.
air pressure
the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth.
concentration
the strength of a solution, esp the amount of dissolved substance in a given volume of solvent, usually expressed in moles per cubic metre or cubic decimetre
condition (science definition)
a mode or state of being, the state of being fit
constant (science definition)
A quantity that is unknown but assumed to have a fixed value in a specified mathematical context.
continuous (science definition)
Relating to a line or curve that extends without a break or irregularity.
composition
the nature of something’s ingredients or constituents; the way in which a whole or mixture is made up.
elevation
height above a given level, especially sea level.
generate (science definition)
to produce or bring into being; create
hazard (science definition)
the inherent properties of a chemical substance that make it capable of causing harm to a person or the environment.
increase
become or make greater in size, amount, intensity, or degree.
influence (science definition)
the impact exerted on an object and leads to a change in its properties, position and so on.
inhabitable
suitable to live in; habitable.
