7.3.1 Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
1
Q
Which carboxylic acids are water soluble? Why?
A
- Ones with fewer than 6 carbons per molecule
- Water molecules hydrogen bond with functional group
2
Q
What are weak acids?
A
- Only slightly ionised in aqueous solutions
- Dissociate into low concentrations of H+, and carboxylate ions
- Concentration of H+ is much smaller than conc of carboxylic acid (equilibrium lies to the left)
3
Q
How can one chemically test for an acid?
A
- Add sodium hydrogen carbonate
- Produces CO2
4
Q
What is esterification?
A
- Formation of an ester
- By a condensation reaction
- Between alcohol and carboxylic acid
- In presence of strong acid catalyst
