7.3 Flashcards
3 Types of memory
- Sensory memory
- short-term memory
- long-term memory
Sensory memory
A memory system that very briefly stores sensory info in close to it’s original sensory form. (usually only lasts a second or 2)
*staring at a picture for 1 min and seeing its reflection on the wall, or when someone is talking to you and they say that you’re not even paying attention, but you can recite the last few words they said…even if you were thinking about something else.
short-term memory
a memory storage system that briefly holds a limited amount on info and awareness
working memory
an active processing system that keeps different types of info available for current use (includes sounds, images, and ideas)
memory span
7 items (+-2)
*Think, phone numbers
chunking
organizing info into meaningful units to make it easier to remember
long-term memory
the relatively permanent storage of info (think hard drive)
serial position effect
the ability to recall items from a list depends on order of presentation, with items presented early or late in the list remembered better than those in the middle.
Primacy= beginning remember better Recency= end remember better
