7.1 Flashcards
memory
the nervous system’s capacity to acquire and retain skills and knowledge
(1st phase) encoding
the processing of info that can be stored
(2ns phase) storage
the retention of encoded representations over time
(3rd phase) retrieval
The act of recalling or remembering stored info when it is needed
equipotentitality theory
Karl Lashley concluded that memory is distributed throughout the brain rather than confined to a specific location.
Hebb’s memory theory
As opposed to Lashley, Hebb believed that memories are stored in multiple regions of the brain, and they are linked through memory circuits.
consolidation
A process by which immediate memories become lasting ( or long-term) memories
reconsolidation
neural processes involved when memories are recalled and then stored again for later retrieval
