7.3 Flashcards
What can aviation snips be used to cut ?
Fine metal
Whats a screw driver made up of ?
Tip, shank, handle
Whats the shank on a screw driver made from ?
Carbon steel
( tip is made from the same material but hardened )
Why is a socket type end screw diver useful in aviation ?
Means you can have 1 screw driver with many different ends.
Whats the size of the screw heads which are placed into the socket type screw driver ?
1/4 inch
What letter in dimension shows the thickness of a flat head screw driver ?
Dimension B
What dimension shows the width of a flat head screw driver ?
Dimension A
How much of the screw head must a flat head screw driver tip fill so it doesn’t slip ?
75 %
Whats the point angle of a Philips screwdriver ?
30 degrees
( has blunt end )
Whats the point angle of a reed and prince screw driver ?
45 degrees
( shape tip )
Whats an advantage of using a reed and prince screwdriver over a Phillips ?
Less chance to cam-out and also can apply more torque
What’s the two sizes ( size 1,2 ) of a reed and prince screw driver used for ?
Size 1 - used for PH5 and smaller screws
Size 2 - used for PH6 and larger screws
What can Cause cam - out of a screw ?
Incorrect bit has been used to drive screw head ?
Whats an advantage of a Posidrive screw driver head ?
Has good contact area between bit and screw reducing the risk of cam-out with more torque being applied.
( used in same locations as a Phillips screw where possible higher torque loadings are required )
What does the size of a Posidrive screwdriver range from in size ?
Size ranges from Pz0 - Pz5
What is the head on a Torx screw driver shaped like ?
Star
Whats the advantage of a torx screw driver ?
Requires less operator effort
Reduces cam-out
Can remove torx screws full of debris
What size does a Torx screw driver range from ?
Range from T1 - T100
What size Torx screw driver head should be used if the size of the screw is T25 ?
T25 screw driver
( head must be same size to screw )
Whats an internal hex screw head type also know as ?
Allen key
Where is an internal hex ( Allen key ) screw used ?
High stress pressurised areas
Whats an advantage of using a tri-wing screw head ?
Can transfer greater torque loads to the screw
Whats the difference in heads between a torq-set screw and a Phillips screw ?
On torq-set bit, the cross on head is offset
What does the size of a torq-set screw bit range from ?
0-10 mm
Where can torq-set screws be used ?
Floor boards, Fuel panels, areas of high stress and flexing.
Whats an advantage of using MorTorq screw bits ?
- Can successfully removed MorTorq screws with paint and debris built up in head.
- Lightweight
What does the size of a MorTorq screw bit range from ?
PMT-000 to PMT-8
Where do you use a MorTorq screw ?
Structure - airliners
External knowledge applications - helicopters
Whats used to remove damage screws ?
Screw extractor
How is a screw extractor used to remove damaged screw from hole ?
One end with fixed screw thread is tightened into nearby hole,
Whats the three hammers used in aviation ?
Ball Pein
DIN general purpose
Soft mallet
What does a mallet reduce ?
Damage to surface
Force transmitted back to hand
Whats the face of a mallet made from ?
Nylon or natural rubber
What are diagonal pliers ( snips )used for ?
Cutting wires
Whats used to harden jaws on diagonal pliers ?
Inductive heating and quenching
Whats the size of a vice measured by ?
Jaw width
Whats the head angle of an open-end spanner usually ?
15 degrees
( open end spanner head angle ranges from 0(parallel)-90 degrees )
What does an open-ended crows foot spanner have at the opposite end of the jaws ?
Square drive to fit a ratchet which apples turning force.
Whats a combination spanner got on its ends ?
Open-end at one end of shaft and ring spanner at other end.
Whats the purpose of a breaker bar ?
To “break” the torque when removing a fastener.
Whats the two groups of torque wrenches
Type 1 - indicate torque value via scale, dial or electronically.
Type 2 - indicate torque value via feel, audible or visible signal.
Where is the L1 and L2 length measured from on a torque wrench ?
L1 - measured from centre of handle to end of wrench ( normal length )
L2 - measured from centre of handle to end of extension ( extended length )
When applying an extension onto end of torque wrench, what must happen to the prescribed torque value ?
It will decrease due to the lever being extended.
When the an extension has been attached onto the end of a torque wrench at 90 degrees, what happens to the prescribed torque value.
Stays the same as theres no change in length with the wrench itself
How many mm is 1 inch ?
25.4
What angle does a centre punch which is used for light work have ?
60 degrees
What angle is the pin on a pin punch used for light work ?
60 degrees
What angle is the pin on a pin punch used for general work ?
90 degrees
What punch is first used when tapping out a Bolt or pin ?
Taper punch
( rest of Bolt must be driven out with pin punch after taper punch almost fills the bolt hole. )
What does a pin punches diameter range from ?
0.8 mom - 1.6mm
Which direction does green aviation snips cut ?
Curve right
Which direction does yellow aviation snips cut ?
Cut straight.
Which direction does red aviation snips cut ?
Curve left
Whats the cutting direction on a hacksaw ?
Teeth face forwards.
Whats the cutting direction of a junior hacksaw ?
Teeth face backwards ( towards handle )
How is a hand brace better than a normal screwdriver ?
You can apply heavier pressure and greater torque.
What does the helical groove on a drill bit allow ?
Removal of swarf and cutting fluid to enter.
What does the chisel edge provide the drill bit ?
Thrust to penetrate into the work piece.
Whats used to calibrate a micrometer ?
Gauge block.
Can a torque analyser be used in a workshop ?
