What is instinct?
behaviors that are unlearned and present in fixed patterns throughout a species
What is drive?
an urge originating from a physiological discomfort such as hunger, thirst, or sleepiness
What is negative feedback in relation to motivation?
works by maintaining stability and homeostasis
What are the four factors the influence motivation?
instincts
drives/negative feedback
arousal
needs
What is the drive reduction theory?
suggest that a physiological need creates an aroused state that drives the organism to reduce that need by engaging in some behavior
What are incentives in relation to incentive theory?
external stimuli, objects, and events in the environment that either help induce or discourage certain behaviors
What are Maslow’s hierarchy of needs from bottom to top?
physiological needs
safety needs
love and belongingness
esteem needs
self-actualization
What is physiological needs in regards to Maslow’ hierarchy of needs?
maintain internal homeostasis
What are safety needs in regards to Maslow’ hierarchy of needs?
feel safe and protected, establish routine and familiarity, and feel like the word is organized and predicatble
What is love and belongingness in regards to Maslow’ hierarchy of needs?
need to receive and give love, affection, and trust; need to be a part of a group or community to avoid loneliness
What is esteem needs in regards to Maslow’ hierarchy of needs?
need to achieve self-esteem and independence ; need to receive esteem and respect from others
What is self-actualization in regards to Maslow’ hierarchy of needs?
need to realize one’s full potential and find meaning beyond one’s self
