7.2 Flashcards
Enzyme
Speeds up rate of a specific chemical reaction in the cell, used over and over, almost always a protien
Substrate
The substance which the enzyme act upon
Active site
Region on enzyme where substrate binds and chemical reaction happens
Activation energy
minimum energy required for a reaction to happen
1st property of an enzyme
Sensitive to heat, temp, PH
2nd property of an enzyme
Not consumed in reaction
3rd property of an enzyme
Almost always a protein
4th property of an enzyme
Reaction specific
How would you maximize enzyme activity?
Temp, PH, enzyme concentration, substrate concentration, inhibitors or activators
Compare and contrast inhibition and activation of enzymes
Molecules that increase the activity of an enzyme are called activators, while molecules that decrease the activity of an enzyme are called inhibitors.
Relationship between reaction rate and substrate concentration
Increasing substrate concentration also increases the rate of reaction to a certain point
As you increase the concentration of the coenzyme, the rate of the enzyme reaction tends to increase proportionally.
