(7.1) Succession Flashcards
1
Q
First example
A
Bare rock/barren land is first colonised
- Glacier //
- volcanoes
- Silt mud
2
Q
Pioneer species
A
The first species to colonise an inhospitable environment
3
Q
Climax community
A
Org which make final stage of succession
1 dom animal & plant species
4
Q
Succession
A
The changes over time in a species that occupy an area
5
Q
Common features of succession
A
-NL environment = less hostile: soil forms, +nutrients, plants provide shelter from wind
- A Greater number of variety of habitats
- Biodiversity; Early stages (greatest), Mid-succesion (Peak) CC- reduced (dom species outcompete pioneer species)
- More complex food webs
- Increased biomass - Mid succession
6
Q
Secondary succession
A
Rapid process
- doesn’t begin w/ pioneer species!
- land has already sustained life
- land clearance due to forest fire
- (soil is better)
7
Q
Adaptation of pioneer species
A
- Produce vast quantities of wind dispersed seeds/ spores - easily reach isolated situations
- Rapid germination of seeds on arrival
- They photosynthesise!
- nitrogen fixing (from ats) (soil has few/lil nutrients)
- tolerant to extreme conditions
