Q

Common features of succession

A

-NL environment = less hostile: soil forms, +nutrients, plants provide shelter from wind

  • A Greater number of variety of habitats
    • Biodiversity; Early stages (greatest), Mid-succesion (Peak) CC- reduced (dom species outcompete pioneer species)
  • More complex food webs
  • Increased biomass - Mid succession

Q

Secondary succession

A

Rapid process

  • doesn’t begin w/ pioneer species!
  • land has already sustained life
  • land clearance due to forest fire
  • (soil is better)

Q

Adaptation of pioneer species

A
  • Produce vast quantities of wind dispersed seeds/ spores - easily reach isolated situations
  • Rapid germination of seeds on arrival
  • They photosynthesise!
  • nitrogen fixing (from ats) (soil has few/lil nutrients)
  • tolerant to extreme conditions
