7.1 CNS Organization Flashcards
Cortical is
Home of the conscious mind, everything you’re aware of
Subcortical functions are
Subconscious
Outer portion of the brain
Cerebral cortex (cerebrum), two hemispheres, cortical functions (conscious processing)
Subcortical regions
Diencephalon
- thalamus and hypothalamus
Brain stem
- midbrain (mesencephalon)
- pons
- medulla oblongata
Limbic system (emotions)
& basal ganglia (decision making)
Spinal cord
Ventricles
Pockets of CSF in the brain
CSF is
- produced from blood (choroid plexus)
- circulates CNS through subarachnoid
- vol. doesn’t change (converts back to blood)
Membranes around the brain
Meninges
Name the meninges
Periosteum (bone):
Dura Mater (tough, thick collagen)
No space but blood vessels (subdural)
Arachnoid Mater (spacey, CSF inside)
Pia Mater (deepest, against brain folds)
Diffusion tensor imaging
Shows white matter activity in the brain (colorful)
Contralateral Processing
- left side of body controlled by right brain
- right side controlled by left brain
- information must cross over
Left side of brain responsible for
Language, math, and logic
Right side of brain responsible for
Emotions, patterns, intuition, and music
Corpus callosum
Connects the two hemispheres, split brain
