7.06 immune System Flashcards
External Defense
The skin covers and protects the body from many pathogens and foreign substances encountered every day
Mucus membranes and their secretions help defend the mouth, nose, and eyes, using both chemical and physical means to minimize the pathogens that enter the body
Internal Defense
Inflammatory response increases blood flow to localized infection (cut, splinter, etc.)
Phagocytes are white blood cells that ingest and destroy invading pathogens such as bacteria cells
Fever increases the body temperature, speeding up important immune responses
Immune System 2 Parts
Humoral Defense
Cell Mediated Immunity
Immune System
B cells bind with antigens and divide, producing plasma cells and memory B cells
Plasma cells produce antibodies that bind to more antigens in the system, signaling for their destruction
Memory B cells remain in the system to provide a more rapid response if the same type of pathogen ever invades again
Helper T cells identify infected body cells by the antigen markings on the cell surface, causing rapid division of the helper T cells
The numerous helper T cells activate cytotoxic T cells and produce memory T cells.
The cytotoxic T cells destroy the infected body cells.
Memory T cells remain in the system to provide a more rapid response if the same type of pathogen invades again
