Resource-based eg- enclosure size/design
Animal-based eg- behaviour, appearance, health

A
- Body condition
- Hair/feather condition
- Obesity/lameness

A
Can identify the prevalence of disease and life span.

What factors can have an effect on lifespan?
A
- prolonged stress/anxiety
- inbreeding
- impaired maternal behaviour
- aggression between animals

What physiological indicators are there?
A
- heart rate
- reflects the activity of the ANS. HR can increase due to pain, happiness, pleasure, fear
- a baseline must be determined first before trying to use it as an indicator

Define ‘ontogeny’
A
As an animal starts to get older, it decreases time spent to the mother- they have to learn to adapt and survive on their own

What are sensitive periods?
A
A time in life when a small amount/lack of experience will have a large effect on later behaviour
Dogs:
- Neonatal (1-2 weeks)
- Transition (3 weeks)
- Socialisation (4-14 weeks)
- Juvenile period (14 weeks +)
