7. Transport in Plants Flashcards
What do the xylems and phloems transport?
xylem:
* water
* inorganic materials
* root to parts of the plant above ground
* sap only moves in 1 direction
phloem:
* substances made by photosynthesis
* from leaves to other parts of the plant
* from storage organs to other parts of the plant
* fluid can move in different directions in different tubes simultaneously
What are dicotyledons?
- flowering plants
- contain an embryo with 2 cotyledons (seed leaves)
- leaves with a blade (lamina)
- stalk (petiole)
What are parenchyma?
- basic plant tissue
- metabolically active
What are collenchyma?
- modified form of parenchyma
- extra cellulose thickening – provides extra support
What are sclerenchyma?
- provides strength and support
- impregnated with lignin
- dead mature cells – no visible contents
What is lignin?
hard material made by plants to strengthen cell walls
What is assimilation in plants?
a range of processes where plants convert inorganic nutrients into organic compounds e.g. photosynthesis
What is a source?
a site which provides food
What is a sink?
a site that receives food
