7) Second language acquisition Flashcards
What does the term “second language” refer to?
any language learned after one’s first language, no matter how many others have been learned
What is the difference between second language learning and foreign language learning?
SLL is the process of acquiring a non-native language that is spoken by the community where the learner is living (e.g. native speaker of Japanese comes to US to study English), FLL is when the learner is not surrender by the community that speaks that language (e.g. American studies Japanese in US)
What are the theories of second language acquisition?
behaviorism, comprehensible input + the natural order hypothesis, the interaction hypothesis, socioculturalism, universal grammar
What is contrastive analysis hypothesis and to which theory does it belong?
it belongs to behaviorism, it says that differences between learner’s L1 and the L2 are the main source of difficulty for L2 learners
What is the one area where contrastive analysis continues to be used?
when predicting pronunciation problems
What is comprehensible input?
input in the target language that is slightly more advanced than the learner’s current level of ability; L2 learners need to be exposed to a special kind of input in order to learn the target language
What is the natural order hypothesis about?
all learners, regardless of their L1, progress through the same stages of second language development and in the same order
What is the interaction hypothesis?
suggests that second language development can be faciliated when learners attempt to communicate with other speakers in the L2
What is “Universal Grammar”?
focus on innate linguistic knowledge, known as nativism, a work of Noam Chomsky
Name some of the idnividual differences in second language acquisition
first language, age, gender, working memory, motivation, context of second language learning
What are some process-related factors that all learners have in common?
attention, development sequences, fossilization
Name same of the teaching methods of SLA
Grammar Translation approach, Direct Method, Audiolingual Methos, Community Language Learning, Silent Way, Natural Approach
Which method of SLA was traditionally used to teach Greek and Latin and the end goal was not oral communication?
Grammar Translation approach
Which SLA method emphasizes spontaneous oral interaction, inductive approach to grammar and emphasis on everyday vocabulary?
direct method
Which SLA method emphasizes spoken language, inductively thaught grammar, and little or no explicit grammar explanation?
audiolingual method
