7. Particle Interactions Flashcards
What is the exchange particle of the strong interaction?
Pions are the exchange particle of Strong Nuclear Interaction
What is the exchange particle of the Electromagnetic Interaction
The exchange particle of the electromagnetic interaction is the virtual photon
What is the exchange particle of the Weak Interaction
The exchange particle of the weak interaction is the W+ and W- bosons
What are the main interactions?
Beta-minus decay
beta-plus decay
Electron Capture
Electron-proton collisions
Electromagnetic repulsion
What happens in the Beta-minus decay interaction
one neutron goes in, and a proton goes out, to balance out the charges a W- boson transfers a negative charge across to the other side so the charges balance, causing an Electron and Antineutrino to also exit the interaction.
What happens in the Beta-plus decay interaction
One proton goes in and one neutron goes out, to balance out the charges a W+ boson transfers a positive charge across to the other side sot the charges balance, causing a positron and a neutrino to also exit the interaction.
What happens in the Electron Capture interaction
In the electron capture interaction A proton and electron both go in, and the proton acts on the electron, while a neutron goes out, however to conserve the lepton number a W+ Boson transfers a lepton number, causing a neutrino to also leave.
What happens in the Electron-proton Collisions
A proton and an electron go in, and the electron acts on the proton, while a neutron goes out, however, to conserve charge, a W- boson goes across transferring the electrons charge to create a neutron.
What happens in Electromagnetic Repulsion?
Two electrons go in, but as they get closer the electromagnetic force causes them to repel from each other this is done by the Virtual photon causing to electrons to go out but moving away from each other again.
This Interaction does not always occur with Electrons, and can occur with any particle of equal charge.
