3. Antiparticles and Leptons Flashcards
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
the electromagnetic spectrum is a continuous spectrum of all possible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation
What is the frequency of a wave?
The frequency of a wave is the number of complete waves poassing a point per second
What is the wavelength of a wave?
The wavelength of a wave is the distance between two adjacent crests of a wave
What are the classes of electromagnetic radiation?
Radio Waves, Microwaves, Infrared waves, Visible light, Ultraviolet waves, X-Rays, Gamma Rays
How does energy link to frequency
Energy can be linked to frequency from the equation E = hf, where h is planck’s constant, E is the energy, and f is the frequency, basically the higher the frequency the greater the energy stored is.
how can EM waves be released?
EM waves can only be exist in discrete packets, and these discrete packets are known as photons.
What is an Ant8iparticle
An antiparticle is a copy of a particle with the same mass and rest energy, but with an opposite charge.
What is the antiparticle for a proton
Antiproton
What is the antiparticle for a neutron
Antineutron
What is the antiparticle for an electron
Positron
What is the antiparticle for a Neutrino
Antineutrino
What is Pair Production?
Pair production is one of Einstein’s theories, it states that energy can turn into mass and mass can turn into energy, so when energy is converted into mass you get equal amounts of matter and antimatter.
When does pair production occur
Pair production only happens if there is enough energy to produce the masses of the particles. It must always produce a particle and its corresponding antiparticle because certain quantities must be conserved (mass + charge + energy)
What is Annihilation
Annihilation is what happens when an antiparticle meets its antipparticle
What hapens during annihilation?
All the mass of the particle and antiparticle get converted back to energy in the form of two gamma ray photons
