7. Nerve structure Flashcards
name the structures on motor neurone
- dendrites
- myelin sheath
- axon
- cell body
where are the sodium channels located
in the myelin sheath
name the three things that can affect the rate of conduction
- Mylination
- Axon diameter
- Temperature
how can myelination affect the rate of conduction?
myelinated nerves means impulses can jump from node of ranvier to node, which decreases the distance they travel,
non-myelinated nerves have to travel a longer distance across the axon
how can axon diameter affect the rate of conduction?
a larger axon diameter decreases the friction of sodium ions, which increases conduction rate
how can temperature affect the rate of conduction?
if temp is above 40 degrees, it can denature the enzymes meaning protein channels denature, slowing the rate of diffusion and therefore conduction
