3. Nervous Communication And Receptors Flashcards
Define a reflex arc
A reflex arc is the fast process of reacting to a certain stimuli, bypassing your brain for a quick reaction
List the order of the reflex arc
- Receptors —> Senators Neurone —> relay neurone —> motor neurone —> Affector
What is the affector?
The muscle which responds to the signals
Name roles of receptors
- detect stimuli
- transducers
- cause generator potentials
Define a transducer
The process of converting stimuli to electric signals
What does the nervous system rely on?
Relies on ions, their movement and charge across the nervous system
Define Generator Potential
The change in PD across a cell membrane due to the presence of a stimuli (positive inside cell membrane, negative outside)
Define resting potential
PD across a cell membrane when a cell is at rest/not stimulated,
(Sodium is positive outside the cell membrane and negative on the inside)
What is the name of the receptor that resembles an onion structure?
Pasinian Corpuscle
Define Pacinian Corpuscle
It is a mechanical receptor which responds to pressure
Describe the structure of Pasinian Corpuscle
- made from layers of tissue called lamallae
- has stretch-mediated sodium channels
Pasinian Corpuscle detects….
Large pressure changes/ vibrations
What are the protein channels inside of Pasinian Corpuscle
Stretch mediated sodium channels
What conditions must there be For the stretched mediated sodium channel to open?
- the lamallae must be deformed/ stretched
What do the stretched mediated sodium channels allow?
They allow sodium ions to move inside leading to a generator potential,
This would lead to action potential if the threshold is reached
